Congrats Abhinav Bindra!!

Hey,

Abhinav Bindra's achievement is all that has been hogging the news lately and I am glad about it. He truly deserves every accolade he gets. He seems to be unaffected by it, but it has got to have changed him in some way. He is India's first ever individual gold medal winner in the 108 years of Olympic history.

But the fact is he has done it all on his own. He has spent crores to go abroad and trained. He has an airconditioned shooting range in his backyard. How many people can afford that? He owes nothing to the archaic government and the sports authorities.

Atleast we can hope that this starts an Olympics movement in our country. The government should at least invest in this current hype and try to improve the current sad situation. We have a Commonwealth game to host in 2010 and we should aim for a decent showing there.

For now, Kudos to Abhinav Bindra!! You have made the country proud!!

Yeah, Abhinav Bindra has truly done the country proud .... But while it is definitely cool to revel and bask in his glory, it is also an ironic and sardonic indication of the dismal state of Indian sports vis-a-vis international competitions like the Olympics.

I mean, while we must all applaud and commend him for his achievement, I do feel we must feel some shame at the fact that we got the first individual event gold medal after 61 years of Independance!! It is one thing to celebrate a victory, it is another to trumpet it around like something spectacular and outstanding .... By hyping and going gaga, we and the Indian media are unwittingly becoming somewhat of an amusement/laughing stock of the world.

Its not to say Bindra must not be lauded, I am just saying that to me it seems we should behave more sheepish than overjoyed! ;)
